Suppose you’re unlucky enough to break down or be involved in an accident on a major road or highway in Spain. In that case, you have to wear a hi-vis jacket when outside the vehicle.

You’ll need to put it on before you get out of the vehicle, it’s best stored in the passenger compartment to reach it easily if needed. Fine for not wearing hi-vis can start at €200.

There are three essential documents to have with you, your driving licence, the «permiso de circulación» and the ITV card. It goes without saying that these must be valid, legal and original. You’ll also need to display an ITV sticker you can read more here.

Carrying hazard warning triangles is a must. You need two of these in your vehicle at all times. It’s a good idea to practice putting them up and always make sure they are clean and easily accessible.

If you’re on a motorway, you’ll only need one behind the vehicle so any approaching vehicle is aware you are stopped. As well as being a huge safety risk, failure to carry these could cost you a fine.

Also, you need to make sure that in the event of a puncture you’ll need a Spare Wheel or you could be fined if you get caught short. If you need help replacing the wheel you can dial the breakdown assistance of your insurance, which is something most people unknown.

The “Dirección General de Tráfico” (DGT), is the organisation responsible for controlling and monitoring the Spanish road network. They provide details of drivers and vehicles to the Police if needed. They also advise that drivers should also carry jump leads, a torch, a charged mobile phone and window cleaning equipment with them.
